Alstroemeria – ideal garden plant

Posted on February 2, 2022March 2, 2022 by Lizzy Borders

Alstroemeria is known to many as a cut flower for a vase. Alstroemeria is less well known as a garden plant. And that’s a shame because for me this is the ideal garden plant.

Alstroemeria is available in many colors and can also be planted in a pot.

The plant blooms throughout the garden season until autumn. This perennial forms tubers under the ground. In a very harsh winter you can cover them with some straw. I’ve had them for 10 years and never really cover them. The plant comes back together.

Place the plant in a warm spot, preferably in the sun or partial shade.

Maintenance
Every year after flowering we cut them back and the following year we see a sea of flowers again. Twice a year we sprinkle organic plant food in pellets around the roots. These granules ensure that the plant has sufficient nutrition during the flowering season. We scatter the granules in March and then again in June. The plant then has sufficient nutrition and flowers continuously until autumn.
We lime our garden once a year and we also include Alstroemeria in this.

A colorful whole in your border, but also useful to occasionally remove some branches for your home. The more branches you pull out, the more new stems the plant will create.
